As well as the day job in Nautical Education Stephen was also a cre-member with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, serving on Fleetwood Lifeboat for over 25 years. In 1984 he received a national award and medal for a job he undertook in rescuing a windsurfer in difficulties off the Blackpool coast in gale-force conditions.
